Okanagan residents filled the pews of Trinity Baptist Church on Tuesday, eager to hear what athlete Ray Zahab and actress Mia Farrow had to say.
Former pack-a-day smoker Zahab spoke of his 111 day run across the Sahara Desert where he witnessed the incredible importance of clean water.
On the run, he witnessed a nomad girl longing for his nearly empty water bottle.
He later learned that the nomads, and in fact many in Africa, never have clean water.
The realization of the importance of water his forced him to re-evaluate his life.
“My eyes were opened and they will never close again.”
Zahab encouraged the crowd to do something — anything, “All of us on this planet, in this room — none of us are limited. We totally underestimate our ability to do great things”
Actress Mia Farrow spoke about her experiences in Darfur, which she called a genocide in slow motion.
“We all failed to protect our brothers and sisters in their darkest hour,” Farrow admonished, listing facts about the atrocity in Darfur.
Eighty to ninety percent of villages in Darfur are in ashes.
Three million people are displaced.
Forty percent of children in camps are malnourished.
And yet, Farrow noted that people still ask, “Dar-where?”
Farrow also spoke about her most recent project: to preserve and document cultural artifacts, traditional songs and dances.
Trinity’s own Simon Ng was invited to speak about Freedom 151, which is working with International Justice Mission to free 151 slaves.
It is believed that there are over 27 million people in various forms of slavery world-wide.
To free a slave, it costs about $1,000.
Ng and his Middle School Ministry have raised $129,489 in the past eight months.

Friday night, the two sea containers that have been in the back corner of our parking lot left to begin the trip to Cameroon. Inside them are medical equipment, sewing machines, bicycles, computer equipment, textbooks and so much more!
Huge thanks go to the generous people who donated their goods, time and money to make this happen!

The rain yesterday morning didn’t stop 43 motorcycle riders from showing up in the Trinity parking lot to ride for the annual Samaritan’s Purse Turn on the Tap motorcycle ride. Riders’ registration fees, pledges collected and donations go towards getting water filtration systems into the homes of thousands of people in third world countries. A number of local churches were represented and we enjoyed the hospitality of Alexis Park Church in Vernon for a half-way point snack and The House in Kelowna at the end of our ride for lunch.
Donations are welcome anytime to this very worthy cause and can be made through www.turnonthetap.ca
To those who rode and donated – thank you!!
“I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.” Mark 9:41
“I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40
