On Friday, December 10th the Brazil Mission Team 2011 will mind your Kindergarten to Grade 5 children from 6:00 – 9:00 pm here at Trinity Church while you go Christmas shopping or just have a night off. There will be adult and teen supervision and a healthy snack will be provided so please feed your child dinner beforehand. Since this is a fundraiser we are suggesting a minimum donation of $15 for the first child and $10 for each additional child per family for the night.

To register your child, please email Sandi at soloffs@trinitybaptist.net or call at 250-860-3273 x 139.

A note from our OCC coordinator, Carmen Vetter:

“514 boys and girls will be excited, thankful and blessed this year to receive their very own Christmas box.

It is always a blessing to see that so many people get involved, with packing or donations, to bring much needed  joy and hope to a child they do not even know !”

Thank you Trinity!

Trinity Baptist Church will host the IJM founder and CEO of International Justice Mission, human rights lawyer Gary Haugen on Saturday December 4th and Sunday, December 5th, 2010.

Haugen, formerly the U.N. Officer in Charge of its investigation of the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, will share about his organization’s work bringing rescue to victims of violent oppression including slavery, illegal detention, sex trafficking and torture. Service times are Saturday at 5:30 pm, Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and again at 11:00 a.m.

Haugen leads IJM’s multinational staff in the most serious confrontation of slavery in the past 150 years.  His proposal – that the poor are entitled to the protection of their own countries’ laws – is transforming traditional approaches to international human rights work and has awakened U.S. Christians to their responsibility to seek justice on behalf of the vulnerable. A frequent speaker and guest lecturer, Haugen brings the message of today’s urgent human rights crises to the U. S. government, colleges and universities, and the Christian Church. He has authored numerous books and articles, including Good News About Injustice, Terrify No More, and Just Courage, an invitation to the great adventure of a life lived without fear.

Since its founding in 1997, IJM’s international staff of lawyers, social workers and investigators have worked on the frontlines in 12 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to rescue victims of slavery, trafficking and other forms of violent oppression and to ensure that their needs are met with aftercare services. IJM lawyers then work to prosecute their perpetrators and work with local authorities to implement structural changes.

In all of our areas of work, IJM has secured rescue and relief for more than 14,000 people – with thousands more helped by structural changes that deter future abuse.  Scores of African widows have had illegally seized property restored and thousands of individuals in Southeast Asia have received citizenship to allow them greater opportunity and security. IJM’s aftercare programs have helped thousands of victims of oppression build new lives.

Gary Haugen and the work of IJM have been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, “Dateline-NBC,” “Oprah,” Newsweek, CNN, BBC, NPR and many other media outlets.

Dear Trinity Baptist Church,

We would like to thank you for the ongoing support that you give to BC Teen Challenge.  Your prayers and financial support go a long way in helping us continue to expand and make a difference.  It is a blessing to have churches like yours that partner with us to see this ministry grow.

This has been a tough year, but we are looking forward to what is ahead.  We had a great trip to the island the end of August where one of our students gave his life to Jesus and we had 9 people baptized.  The house has been growing and we are back up to over 20 students, and we are excited to see what God has in store in the coming months.

We hope that you will continue to walk with us as we press on to see more students come to know Jesus as their personal Saviour and be freed from their life-controlling addictions.

In His Service,

The Staff at BC Teen Challenge Okanagan

James 1:17

Take a few minutes to thank God for the experience of this Challenge and for every good and perfect gift He has given you.

As you return to regular eating habits and routines, prayerfully consider how you will respond to what God has shown you.  How will you worship Him?  How will you thank Him?  What will you bring as a compassion offering to church this weekend?

How will you love God, love others and change the world through Christ

Psalm 107:8-9

Lord, we give thanks to you for your unfailing love, and for your wonderful deeds for humankind.  We give you thanks for satisfying the thirsty and for filling the hungry with good things.

As we choose to feel hunger and to restrict ourselves to tap water, we are aware that so many people right now don’t have a choice.  We pray that those who are chronically hungry and who do not have access to clean drinking water would know your unfailing love for them and that they would know our compassion.  Father, we pray that you will clearly call us to a deeper level of love, compassion and response as a result of this Challenge.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

James 2:14-18

How is God calling you to respond?

Luke 14:12-14

Eat Well – For the God who supplies should be honoured with joy.

Eat Well – For even those who hunger express gladness to God.

Eat Well – For when we use the strength of this food to feed others – God is filled with joy.

- World Vision “Thanking God with Integrity”

What are the ways you express gladness to God?  What do you express gladness to Him for?  Begin to pray about the compassion offering you will bring on Oct.30/31.  By giving cash to the Kelowna Food Bank through this offering, each dollar will be tripled through the generous support of their purchasing partners.  Pray today for those who are hungry on a daily basis in our community and ask God to prompt you as to how to respond.

Some Kelowna Food Bank facts:

  • The Kelowna Food Bank has seen a 33% increase in usage over the last year.
  • They served 40,000 people last year – 10,000 of them were children
  • They require 35-40 volunteers per day to operate the Food Bank
  • Recipients of the Food Bank must meet strict eligibility criteria, including an income test
  • Recipients who are approved receive one hamper that will last them about 9 days.  They cannot apply for another hamper for 30 days.
  • Last year, the Food Bank had to reduce the size of their hampers due to reduced giving.  They have not yet been able to restore the hampers to their previous size.

Matthew 25:35-40

If I had only known!

How many times have I uttered these words?  If I had only known ….

… today was the day of the pop quiz …

… that was the last time I would see my auntie …

… those words would cost me the trust of a friend …

… that dude would turn out to be such a dud …

… that act of kindness would be the one that counted …

then I would have done things differently.  So, the question in my mind is – why didn’t I do things differently then????  The answers (excuses?) come quickly.  I was in a hurry, I wasn’t in the mood, I didn’t think it would matter, I was naive, … I didn’t think that would make a difference.

But the point isn’t about what we know or don’t know about a situation or circumstance.  Instead, it is about what and who God wants us to see, how He calls us to respond – and how we choose to respond, with our hearts and in our actions.

Who or what will you choose to “see” today?  How will you respond?
